Vice President Kamala Harris recently participated (10) in a meeting with Univision, where she answered questions about immigration, the economy and health, topics considered crucial for the Latino community. Several questions were raised by voters who shared personal experiences with Harris, highlighting their concern about the impact of the administration's policies.
According to a report by CBS News, referring to the theme "Immigration", Harris emphasized her support for the "Dreamers", young undocumented immigrants who were brought to the US as children. She reiterated that her priority would be to secure a path to citizenship for these individuals, urging Congress to pass legislation that protects their families. She also blamed former President Donald Trump for filibustering a bipartisan bill that would have offered a comprehensive solution for many immigrants.
Regarding the "Latino Vote," Harris said that the support of the Latino community is crucial. According to the publication, the race with Trump is tighter than in 2020, when Biden had a larger advantage among Latino voters. A significant segment of the community is still undecided, making interactions with Latino voters central to her campaign.
Another highlight was when Harris criticized Trump for allegedly secretly sending COVID-19 testing machines to Vladimir Putin during the pandemic, while many Americans, especially Latinos and Blacks, were facing high death rates. When asked about Trump's virtues, she mentioned his love for his family but avoided further praise, claiming she didn't know him well enough.
In response to the Tampa voter who asked about the federal response to recent hurricanes, Harris defended the Biden administration's management, emphasizing that this is not a time to politicize disasters and highlighting her actions to support affected areas.
On the topic of "Economy and Health", Harris addressed the rising cost of living, acknowledging that prices remain high and promising measures to reduce costs, such as control over abusive price increases and tax credits. She also outlined plans to help homebuyers and ensure medical debt doesn't affect credit scores, as well as ensure equal access to opportunities for people with disabilities, including designating long COVID as a condition covered by the "Americans with Disabilities Act."
That meeting exemplified Harris' attempt to
connect with Latino voters, championing progressive policies on sensitive
issues such as immigration, the economy and health care, while criticizing the
previous administration and trying to bolster the support of a vital electoral
base for her candidacy.
