For the first time, the 24th Latin Grammy Awards ceremony was held outside the U.S. in Seville, Spain. Actor and presenter Antonio Banderas welcomed the Spanish audience, marking a successful night for female artists.
Shakira was one of the big winners, taking home the awards for Song of the Year, Best Urban/Fusion Performance, and Best Pop Song for her collaborations with Argentine DJ and producer Bizarrap and Colombian singer Karol G. In her first performance of “Acróstico”, the Colombian star embodied her two young children, returning to the stage later for a medley of her hits, according to NBC News.
Karol G also had a triumphant night, winning the coveted awards for Best Album of the Year and Best Urban Music Album for “Mañana Será Bonito”. Mexican singer-songwriter Natalia Lafourcade took home Record of the Year with “De Todas Las Flores”.
Viewers closely followed the four main categories, which included artists such as Shakira, Peso Pluma, GALE, Maluma and Alejandro Sanz. Producer Édgar Barrera received 13 nominations and won Songwriter of the Year, Producer of the Year, and Best Regional Mexican Song for “un X100to”, a collaboration with Bad Bunny and the Mexican-American group Frontera.
Also, according to NBC News, Laura Pausini was honored with the Latin Recording Academy's Person of the Year award, presented by Karol G. Pausini, a multilingual Italian artist, who expressed her affection for Latin culture in her speech.
The ceremony also highlighted Spain's cultural heritage, with performances by Spanish artists and tributes to figures such as Pablo Picasso, Diego Velázquez, Federico García Lorca, and Paco de Lucía. Rosalía opened the show with a cover of Rocío Jurado’s “Se Nos Rompió El Amor”, and Alejandro Sanz closed the night with an impressive flamenco number while singing “Corazón Partío”.
