Ten Latino personalities in the United States are recognized in Hispanic Heritage Month

An NBC News article was published as a way of honoring ten Latino personalities in the United States who stood out in 2024, with attention to their accomplishments and the importance of their Latino heritage.


During Hispanic Heritage Month, these individuals, in a variety of fields from the arts to the sciences to activism, were recognized for their significant contributions. According to NBC, “while they do vastly different work, they all have one thing in common: Their Latino heritage proudly informs their expertise and their outlook — as well as their commitment to making things better”.


Among the honorees are:

Liza Colón-Zayas: Actress of Puerto Rican descent who won an Emmy for her role in the series "The Bear”. She is an influential figure in TV and theater, being an example of perseverance and talent.


Luis A. Colón: Scientist and chemistry professor, he received the Lifetime Mentor Award for his work in promoting underrepresented students in science, helping them advance their careers.


Marcello Hernández: Comedian and actor of Cuban and Dominican descent, he is a cast member of "Saturday Night Live" and an emerging star of Generation Z.


Kenny Luna: Co-founder of the Loisa brand, which offers healthy Latin food products. He combines his Dominican and Peruvian roots with a desire to improve the quality of traditional foods.


Ana Liz Pulido: Chef and owner of a taqueria in Texas, she won the James Beard Award for Best Chef in Texas. She is recognized for her dedication to providing authentic and quality food.


Dr. Diana E. Ramos: Surgeon General of California, she leads public health initiatives, focusing on mental health and reproductive care, inspiring Latinos with her story of overcoming.


Cristina Rivera Garza: Writer and Pulitzer Prize winner for her memoir about seeking justice for her sister's death. Her work explores issues of violence against women.


Arturo Sandoval: Legendary jazz trumpeter and Kennedy Center honoree, Sandoval is an example of overcoming, having defected from Cuba and built a remarkable career in the USA.


Karl-Anthony Towns: NBA basketball player and social justice advocate, he has lost family members to Covid-19 and has been an active voice on civil rights and health issues.


Andrea Vidaurre: Environmental activist, received the Goldman Prize for her work in reducing emissions in transportation in California, directly impacting air quality.


These individuals reflect the diversity, resilience, and impact of the Latino community in the U.S., showcasing how their cultural roots shape their lives and their contributions to society.
