Bernardo Moreno is a businessman and politician born in Bogotá, Colombia, in 1967, and currently the Republican candidate for the United States Senate from Ohio in the 2024 election. Moreno emigrated with his family to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, at the age of five, becoming a U.S. citizen at 18. He earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Michigan, although there was a misunderstanding about a master's degree, which he never completed.
He began his career at General Motors and then, at the age of 26, became general manager of a Saturn dealership in Boston. In 2005, Moreno moved to Ohio, where he purchased a Mercedes-Benz dealership and expanded his business in the automotive sector. His company, Collection Auto Group, was widely recognized, but in 2019 he began selling his dealerships to focus on a blockchain technology company, Ownum.
Moreno has also been involved in several educational and civic initiatives, such as the founding of the Sales Center for Excellence at Cleveland State University and his election to the Cleveland Business Hall of Fame. However, his business career has faced controversies, including labor lawsuits, gender and age discrimination, as well as a scandal involving a post on an adult site, later explained as a "prank" by a former intern.
In politics, Moreno first ran for the Senate in 2021, but withdrew after meeting with Donald Trump. In 2023, he launched his candidacy again, receiving Trump's endorsement and winning the Republican primaries in 2024. He is married to Bridget Moreno and has four children, with his daughter Emily being married to Congressman Max Miller, who filed for divorce in 2024.
