According to a survey conducted by the Nielsen Group on their Latin American programs in the country, the Hispanic audience, compared to the general population, tends to consume and share false news and information online. The report demonstrates that the chances of access to this type of content by the mostly white or non-Latin population are lower. They also illustrate that news sites whose largest consumer audience are Latinos present content considered as "mixed, biased, conspiratorial or pseudoscience."
Young Hispanics aged 18-34
are more than twice as likely to use WhatsApp and Telegram than the general
population. "Misinformation poses a threat to Hispanics, who are
particularly vulnerable due to a greater reliance on social media and messaging
platforms," the report published Friday reads. These are important
factors, as the vulnerability of this audience to fake news is more
significant, not only because of the ease of sharing this type of content
across networks but also because the content traveling through encrypted social
messaging applications is more resistant to verification.
