Protests for immigration reform amid the budget reconciliation process

Since Senate Democrats passed a $3.5 trillion budget resolution in August, a process known as "Budget Reconciliation" has been started aimed to pass party-line legislation that includes two bills from current President Joe Biden. In addition to the $550 million bipartisan infrastructure project, a broader initiative provides for social spending, health care, and fiscal measures that need to pass the Senate by a simple majority vote.

One of the items in the package is an immigration reform considered too big to be included in the social spending bill currently negotiated by Democrats in Capitol Hill.

Due to the importance of this theme to the thousands of immigrant families, hundreds of protesters gathered at Lafayette Square in front of the White House on Thursday for a midday "escalation rally" for immigrant rights. A stage was constructed for a lineup of speakers who admonished Democrats for failing to enact long-sought relief, despite controlling both houses of Congress and the Oval Office.
