Vice President Kamala Harris has hired Megan Jones, who was a senior adviser to the late Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev), to join her team ahead of the midterm elections in November this year.
According to the Politico “Harris’ team is gearing up to deploy the VP into battleground states in the midterms, and her office has relied on a mix of aides and outside informal advisors to shape some of her speeches and help prepare for the new phase”.
Jones is expected to contribute his fundamental knowledge of Nevada, the state considered a “battleground” in the elections. After working for Harry Reid, she served as a partner at Las Vegas-based public relations firm Hilltop Public Solutions and served as a consultant for Kamala Harris' 2020 presidential race at Silver State. He also worked for Reid in his re-election campaigns in 1998, 2004 and 2012, for former President Obama's re-election campaign in 2012, and to elect Nevada Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D) in 2016.
Jones’ arrival comes “amid waves of staff departures and hires in the VP’s office, including a new chief of staff, an overhaul of its communications team, and changes to the speechwriter ranks”, according to Politico.
According to The Hill, She joins Harris’s team as the administration is “trying to hold on to Nevada, which Biden won in 2020, and court Hispanic voters ahead of the November midterms”.
“Harris’ senior aides have tried to impart a sense of stability while the VP in recent weeks has focused extensively on fallout from the Supreme Court’s decision to end abortion rights, meeting with state lawmakers from around the country on the issue”, as noted by Politico’s publication.
In Nevada, Jones has been working on local races and working for clients including Everytown for Gun Safety, NextGen and the Western Conservation Foundation, according to the Hilltop website.
