TikTok videos of young Latinos are being consumed more than ever. Since promoting the learning of Spanish through copyright songs, the recognition of Latin women who have made history in the United States and abroad, performing folk dances of Latin origin and even sharing moments of their daily life at work, young Latinos have stood out and gained thousands of followers. When they present their identities in the form of videos, they intend to acknowledge the importance of Latin culture.
“TikTok hashtags #Latino, #Latina, #Familia and #Comida, among others, grew in use by more than 185% since last year's Hispanic Heritage Month, celebrated from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 each year”, according to data shared by TikTok spokesperson Cynthia Dew. “The hashtags #Latino and #Latina have more than 62 billion views combined”, added Dew.
According to the company, "Tik Tok has helped Hispanics perform their identity specially by providing stickers such as a crown, chili pepper and avocado that creators can insert in their videos. This year TikTok also launched a series of live videos featuring Latinx creators celebrating themes such as "La Comida" to "La Cultura Pop", and other initiatives that guide searches for content related to Latin culture.
Tik Tok and other apps have acted as an important link between the youth of the Latino community in the United States, allowing the creation and demand of visual content and a greater integration and political activism on different agendas.
