According to TheHill, a new study conducted by The Economist and YouGov points out that 66% of American adults support the measures taken by Congress to increase security at the southern border, as the Biden administration seeks to maintain control of the situation. The survey found that most respondent demographics support increased security, but some groups are considerably more in favor than others.
According to the survey, increased safety is most widely supported by older adults, with 80% or more of seniors 65 and older supporting it. Among adults aged 45 to 64, three-quarters support the measure, while 55% of those aged 30 to 44 and 47% of those aged 18 to 29 also support it.
Furthermore, while 70% of white respondents endorse measures to enhance security, only half of black respondents and 49% of Hispanic respondents agree. Additionally, 25% of black respondents and over 20% of Hispanic respondents said they were not sure.
According to the survey, there were significant differences in opinions regarding party and ideological lines. Of those who voted for Trump in the last presidential election, 96% support congressional action to increase border security, while only 49% of those who voted for Biden do the same. A majority of Republicans (90%) support the measure, while a majority of Democrats and independents are of mixed opinion. About 20% of independents said they weren't sure. The survey was conducted with 1,500 US adults between January 21st and 24th and the margin of error was 3.2 points.
The study comes as the Biden administration is taking steps to amplify its response to the thousands of illegal southern border crossings in recent months. US Customs and Border Protection revealed last week that there were more than 250,000 interactions with people at the southern border during December/22, the highest monthly number recorded during Biden's presidency.
Biden made his first visit during his presidency to the southern border this month, and announced measures to curb the number of illegal entries. These measures include prohibiting people from Cuba, Nicaragua, Venezuela and Haiti from applying for asylum if they are not allowed entry, maintaining "Title 42", policy implemented by the Trump administration, which limits the entry of citizens of these nations into the United States .
