Reverend José Horacio Gómez was born on December 26, 1951, in Monterrey, Mexico. He was ordained a priest of the Prelature of Opus Dei on August 15, 1978, by Cardinal Franz König, Archbishop Emeritus of Vienna, at the Sanctuary of Torreciudad, Spain. Recently, he became a member of the Advisory Board of the National Conference of Diocesan Vocational Directors, and in recent years, he has appeared several times on different lists of influential Hispanics in the country.

In 2007, Gómez brought together Latino leaders and bishops to create the Catholic Association of Latino Leaders (C.A.L.L.). The Association's objective is to impact national dialogue and contribute to the Church's mission, identifying important initiatives for building the Catholic community and supporting them in accordance with the directives of the Bishops.

On July 25, 2008, he was appointed by Pope Benedict XVI as a Consultor to the Pontifical Commission for Latin America and, on May 8, 2010, he was appointed a member of the Special Council for America of the General Secretariat of the Synod of Bishops.
