One initiative by the Bold PAC, the campaign arm of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, to create a digital translation and messaging platform to improve Democrats’ reach among Hispanic voters, drew attention in the run-up to the 2024 election. The platform, called Bold Translate, was launched with limited testing and focus on different topics of interest to Latinos. The goal is to provide translation guidance and best practices for Democratic candidates to communicate effectively with this electorate, The Hill article describes.

Designed as an election communication tactic, the platform’s module includes a glossary of commonly used terms and examples of the best Spanish translations to use in Democratic messages. For example, the module on jobs offers guidance on how to refer to the terms “jobs”, “wages”, “unemployment”, “diminished”, “leisure and hospitality”. The platform also warns of mistranslations, regional slang and jargon to avoid.

Bold PAC Executive Director Victoria McGroary explains that the intention is to avoid inappropriate translations that can occur when using online tools or bilingual dictionaries. The goal is to ensure the messages are understandable to everyone, according to The Hill.

While Bold PAC generally adopts regionalisms to micro target bilingual and Spanish-speaking voters from different national backgrounds, Bold Translate takes a broader approach to ensuring clarity in messaging. However, microtargeting is still maintained as a strategy.

In addition to the glossary, the platform also provides English message guidance and relevant data on each topic. For example, in the abortion module, campaigns are instructed to explain the impact of the Supreme Court decision that overturned the federal right to abortion on Latinas and to highlight the barriers they already face in accessing safe abortion services and reproductive health care.

Bold PAC plans to periodically release guidance on other relevant issues and there are no limits to the platform's expansion. The ultimate goal is to address a number of important issues that affect people in their daily lives and provide a one-on-one communication resource for anyone interested in talking to Latinos about these issues.

McGroary points out to The Hill that they are not concerned about Republicans having access to this publicly available information, as they are focused on ensuring their staff can effectively communicate the good deeds they are doing.
