The Republicans’ stance on climate change is criticized in the airing of an ad in Spanish during the Republican Party presidential debate. The ad aired exclusively on Univision, which broadcast the debate in Spanish in several U.S. cities with significant Latino populations, such as Phoenix, Tucson, Atlanta, Las Vegas, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C. The ad is an initiative of Climate Power, a Democratic group, and is intended to question Republicans' positions on climate change.

The ad highlights clips from the GOP’s first primary debate in 2024, where businessman Vivek Ramaswamy expressed the opinion that “the climate change agenda is a hoax”. Most Republicans are expected to hold tough positions on the environment in the second debate, which was held at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California, as climate change denial has become a key issue for the GOP base.

The Hill’s article underscores the importance of environmental issues to U.S. Latino voters, who consistently regard the environment as an important issue. According to an aforementioned Pew Research survey published in 2021, 81% of Hispanic respondents considered climate change an important or significant issue, compared to 67% of non-Hispanic respondents.

Antonieta Cadiz, deputy director-general of Climate Power En Acción, argues that Republicans are disconnected from the reality Latinos face on a daily basis, with climate change affecting jobs, economic security, and healthcare. She also criticizes Republicans for opposing solutions to the climate crisis, such as the Clean Power Plan, in favor of the interests of big oil, according to the publication.

According to The Hill, the ad “¿Cuál es su Plan Climático?” (“What is your climate plan?”) will also be broadcast on Univision's digital channels, on local news programs and on the Sunday program “Al Punto”, hosted by Jorge Ramos. The initiative seeks to raise awareness of Republicans' stances on the environment among Hispanic voters and highlight the importance of climate issues in elections.
