Miguel Angel Cardona is an American educator who currently holds the position of United States Secretary of Education in the Biden administration. The text describes his trajectory from the beginning of his career to his appointment as Secretary of Education.

Born in Meriden, Connecticut, in 1975, Cardona has Puerto Rican roots and grew up speaking Spanish as his first language. He faced challenges learning English when he entered kindergarten. His educational journey took him from H.C. Wilcox Technical High School, where he attended the automotive studies program, to Central Connecticut State University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in education in 1997. He continued his education at the University of Connecticut (UConn), where he earned a master's degree in bilingual and bicultural education in 2001 and later a doctorate in education in 2011.

Cardona began his career as a fourth-grade teacher at Israel Putnam Elementary School in Meriden. At the age of 27, he was named principal of Hanover Elementary School, becoming the youngest principal in Connecticut state history, a remarkable feat. During his career, he has focused on closing the educational gaps between English learners and their peers.

In August 2019, Governor Ned Lamont appointed Cardona as Connecticut's Commissioner of Education, making him the first Latino to hold that position.

In late 2020, Cardona was nominated as a candidate for the position of United States Secretary of Education in the Biden administration. He was formally appointed in December 2020 and later confirmed by the Senate in March 2021. His appointment was seen as a choice that avoided rivalries between two major teachers' unions and brought to the attention of President-elect Joe Biden through Linda Darling-Hammond, the leader of transition efforts.

Miguel Angel Cardona's trajectory, from his humble beginnings to his ascension to the position of Secretary of Education, reflects his commitment to education and his pursuit of equity and inclusion in education. His appointment highlights the importance of diversity and inclusion in U.S. government and educational leadership positions.
