UnidosUS, the nation’s largest Latino advocacy and civil rights organization, joined four of the largest Latino-led organizations to sign a letter in response to Univision’s Nov. 7 interview with former President Donald Trump. In that interview, the former president said that he will win the Latino vote and that his growing popularity among this population has to do with security.

The letter expresses its disappointment and deep concern about Univision’s election coverage. Signed also by the Hispanic Federation, Mi Familia Vota, Voto Latino and Latino Victory, the entities demand a meeting with Univision’s top executives to understand why the organization chose to conduct such an interview and what the community can expect in the future of this extremely important news organization.

According to a publication by Latin Times, the interview, characterized as “soft”, raised concerns about the network's approach to disinformation and biased campaign coverage.

The letter highlights concerns that the interview could be part of a broader strategic effort by the network to cultivate a closer relationship with Trump. The Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) also requested a meeting with TelevisaUnivision CEO Wade Davis, questioning the network’s recent political reporting and its adherence to editorial guidelines, claiming that the circumstances surrounding the interview suggest the company failed to uphold ethical standards.

After the interview, León Krauze, the anchor of Noticieros Univision, resigned from the network, leading many to speculate about a possible alignment of Univision with Trump as a reason for the firing. While some Latino personalities, such as John Leguizamo, have called for a boycott of Univision, other Hispanic leaders question the CHC’s demands for a meeting with the company’s CEO.

The article also mentions support for Trump’s interview by the American Principles Project, a group that sent a letter to Univision expressing its support. The group argues that the CHC, made up of Democratic members, would be attacking press freedom and interfering in elections if its demands were met.

The debate reflects divisions within the Latino community over how Univision handles political issues and how that could affect the network’s impartiality and journalistic integrity.
