Selena Gomez is expanding her film career by starring in her first Spanish-language film, titled “Emilia Pérez”. The Mexican-American artist shared details of the project during a recent episode of the “SmartLess” podcast, according to a Latin Times publication.
Directed by acclaimed director Jacques Audiard, the film is a crime musical comedy set for release in 2025. In the cast, Selena Gomez joins other prominent personalities such as Zoe Saldaña, Latina transgender actress Karla Sofía Gascón, and Venezuelan Édgar Ramírez. The film promises to bring an innovative approach to storytelling, especially with Gascón’s role as the leader of the fleeing Mexican cartel, incorporating nuances of her own personal journey.
According to the publication, the plot is inspired by a chapter of the French novel "Écoute" ("Listen") by Boris Razon and addresses the story of a drug kingpin who disappears after undergoing a surgical transition from male to female. During the interview on the podcast, Gomez expressed that the experience of filming was exhausting but incredible, and revealed that the film was shot during the summer in Paris.
This is not Selena Gomez's first foray into her Latin heritage, as in 2021 she released “Revelación”, her first Spanish-language album, earning her a Grammy nomination. Additionally, she shared that her hit series, “Only Murders in the Building”, may have a long runtime, while her next album will likely be her last, focusing more on her acting career, her cosmetics company “Rare Beauty”, and philanthropic activities.
The artist also revealed that she is currently
recording music and producing the docuseries “Won't Be Silent”, exploring songs
by female artists who have impacted the world through their art and activism.
Additionally, Selena Gomez received a 2024 Golden Globe nomination for her work
on “Only Murders in the Building”, further solidifying her presence in the
entertainment industry, according to Latin Times.
