New Democratic PAC, backed by George Soros, seeks to make Texas “blue”

A new political group, the Texas Majority PAC, made up of alumni of Beto O'Rourke's 2022 campaign and funded by mega-investor and Democratic billionaire George Soros, "has emerged this election cycle to meet the age-old challenge of turning Texas blue," according to the Texas Tribune. The PAC, while keeping a low profile since its formation more than a year ago, has raised US$2.25 million as of last year.

In collaboration with Soros, the group was able to make incredible six-figure donations to three county parties (Dallas, Cameron and Hidalgo) and other regional groups, with a focus on registering, contacting and attracting voters in Texas. The campaign finance reports, to be released soon, are expected to detail how the money was distributed by the state, according to the publication.

The Texas Majority PAC focuses its efforts on building party infrastructure at the regional level, recognizing the distinct characteristics of the state's diverse regions. PAC deputy executive director Katherine Fischer said the goal is to create the conditions to reverse the state's political situation.

Founded by former members of O'Rourke’s campaign, the group received significant contributions from Soros, most notably through Democracy PAC II. “The PAC represents the latest in a long line of groups who have promised to mobilize more Democratic voters in Texas, a mission shared by the state Democratic Party. Both the PAC and party publicly say they welcome each other’s help, though there have been signs of tension privately as Democrats begin another critical election year”.

The funding has already benefited district parties and regional organizations, providing a financial game-changer for Democrats in regions where they are not accustomed to receiving six-figure donations.

Senator Ted Cruz is running for re-election in 2024, and President Joe Biden faces the challenge of competing in a traditionally red state where he lost by a margin of 6 percentage points four years ago. The PAC reflects a trend of Democratic groups seeking to mobilize voters in Texas, the report said.

The Texas Democratic Party welcomes PAC investments and efforts, emphasizing the urgency of working collectively to achieve ambitious goals, including electing more Democrats in the state. The PAC's mission is compared to successful efforts in other states, such as Georgia, Arizona and Virginia, where Democratic advances have occurred gradually over time. According to the  Texas Tribune, Texas Majority PAC funding  is intended to allow for safer, longer-term planning for fundraising and voter mobilization programs.
