A series of corruption allegations against Miami Mayor Francis Suarez has resulted in a swift backlash from the Florida Democratic Party, which has called for his resignation following allegations that he pushed for a “no-bi” contract that could benefit him personally by favoring a software company linked to one of his private employers.
According to a report published by Latin Times, Florida Democratic Party Chairwoman Nikki Fried criticized Suárez, describing Miami as a “hotbed of political corruption” and expressing disillusionment with his actions. Fried argued that if Suarez did not resign, Gov. Ron DeSantis should suspend him from office. She also suggested that the reaction could be influenced by partisan considerations, claiming that Suarez could have been ousted if he had been a Democrat.
In response to the allegations, Suárez’s office denied any wrongdoing and pointed out that the Florida Ethics Commission did not consider the allegations to be legally sufficient. The statement also denounced an alleged “coordinated coup attempt” by liberal activists and allies of the “local leftist media”. In addition, the statement mentioned another complaint of receiving expensive gifts, filed by an activist, and revealed that Suárez is being investigated by the FBI and the State Attorney’s Office.
Despite the ongoing accusations and
investigations, Suárez did not address the issue during his annual state of the
city address. Instead, he called for more authority as mayor, a proposal that
was rejected by voters in 2018. That move would put him in control of the
budget, civil servants and municipal contracts, the report said.
