The documentary “Frida”, directed by Carla Gutiérrez, takes an innovative approach to the life and work of legendary Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. Rather than relying solely on conventional narratives or external interpretations, Gutiérrez dives deep into Kahlo's own words, using her illustrated diary, intimate correspondence, and interviews to reveal the painter's innermost thoughts.

The film is an emotional and introspective journey, where Kahlo's emotions are expertly brought to life through the lyrical animation that accompanies her iconic paintings. Fernanda Echevarría del Rivero, Kahlo's voice actress, offers a heartfelt interpretation that allows the audience to feel a deeper connection with the artist, as if she were sharing her deepest secrets, NBC News reported.

By exploring the ups and downs of Kahlo's relationship with Diego Rivera, her involvement with Leon Trotsky, her struggles with issues of faith and gender identity, as well as her difficult recovery process after a serious accident, the documentary reveals the complexity of Kahlo's life and her resilience in the face of adversity.

Gutiérrez and his team had unfettered access to previously unseen research materials, allowing them to offer a unique and intimate view of the artist. The result is a captivating cinematic experience that offers both longtime admirers of Kahlo and newcomers a deeper understanding of her legacy.

By showcasing the multiple facets of Kahlo – her rebelliousness, courage, loneliness, vulnerability, and strength – the documentary humanizes the artist, highlighting her ability to face challenges with resilience and creativity.

In addition, the film brings a new interpretation of Kahlo's last painting, "Viva la Vida", providing a deeper meaning to the work and challenging simplistic interpretations.

"Frida" promises to be an immersive experience for viewers, offering an intimate and authentic look at one of the most important artists of the twentieth century.
