The resolution voted in the House on Tuesday (12), led by Republican Representative Monica De La Cruz, denounced President Biden's border policy, accusing him of creating the worst border security crisis in U.S. history. It is alleged that Biden has dismantled effective inland immigration security and enforcement measures, thereby violating the country's immigration law and promoting an open borders agenda. The resolution's passage by 226 votes to 193, with 14 Democrats voting in favor, sends a clear message to the Biden administration, especially as moderate Democrats increase pressure on the president to consider stricter border controls.

The situation is complicated by stalled congressional negotiations on border security, with House Republicans rejecting a bipartisan Senate bill the previous month as insufficient. This stalled legislation in the House, including government funding measures. The border issue is one of the most important to voters, and members of swing districts in both parties are pushing for a solution.

The resolution calls on Biden to use his executive authority to end “catch and release”, expedite the removal of migrants from the country, and reform the asylum system. However, Biden stated that congressional action is needed for any reform to happen, according to The Hill.

Ahead of the vote, more than 20 House Democrats formed a border security task force to debate and lobby for border security policies. Some members of that task force, including co-chair Henry Cuellar, also voted in favor of the resolution critical of Biden.

The Democrats who supported the resolution are a mix of representatives from different states, indicating widespread concern within the party regarding Biden's border policy. This event highlights internal tensions within the Democratic Party on the topic of immigration and border security.
