Over the past 20 years, nine of the ten most common baby names for boys in the U.S. have remained consistent, with one notable exception: Mateo. In 2023, Mateo peaked at number six, marking the first time a Latin name made the list of the country's most popular baby names.
Mateo rose from 11th place in 2022, when more than 11,000 American babies were named after, according to the Social SecurityAdministration. Sophie Kihm, editor-in-chief of baby name website Nameberry, explained to CNN that Mateo began appearing in the top 1,000 names in 1995 and has become increasingly popular in recent years.
Kihm attributes Mateo's rise in popularity to the growth of the Latino population in the U.S. and the fact that more people are turning to their cultural backgrounds when naming their children. She notes that Mateo is seen as friendlier and more approachable than Matthew, with an "o" ending that is much appreciated these days. The name is described as new, but still traditional.
At the top of the list of most popular names, Liam and Olivia held the top spot for the fifth year in a row, while Noah and Emma remained in second place. Social media also has a great influence on the choices of new parents. The girl's name that grew the most in popularity was Kaeli, likely inspired by YouTube and TikTok star Kaeli McEwen. On the male side, the third fastest-rising name was Eiden, possibly influenced by TikTok content creator Wyatt Eiden.
