Colorado Organization in the U.S. Offers Grants to Support Black and Latino Women in Buying Their First Home

A Latin Times article describes the work of the I See You Project, a Colorado-based nonprofit that aims to help low-income women, especially black and Latino women, achieve their dream of buying their first home. Through theShared Power initiative, launched in 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic, the organization is offering $10,000 grants to women buying their first homes and to small business owners.

Initially, the goal was to help 10 women become owners or keep their businesses open. This goal has been met and doubled annually. Latasha Bell, one of the recipients, shared that the grant was the opportunity she needed after years of trying to save for a down payment. Raised by her mother in low-income housing, Bell was determined to provide a better home for her children.

Mercy Tucker, project leader, emphasized the transformative impact of the initiative, highlighting that home ownership is a crucial way to build generational wealth. She also pointed out racial disparities in U.S. homebuying: In 2022, 81% of new homeowners were white, while only 7% were Black and 7% Hispanic/Latino, according to data from the National Association of Realtors.

Since 2021, the I See You Project has awarded 60 scholarships and intends to distribute 40 more this year. The initiative accepts applications from women in Colorado throughout the year, inviting accepted applicants to informational meetings to guide them through the homeownership process.

Anttoinete Johnson, another beneficiary, commented that becoming a homeowner has improved her relationship with the community and the people around her.
