Liza Colón-Zayas, born 1972, is an American actress and playwright best known for her role as Tina Marrero in the comedy-drama series “The Bear”. A New Yorker of Puerto Rican origin, Colón-Zayas brought her striking personality to the role, despite the series taking place in Chicago. Her portrayal of Tina, a tough character and single mother, was influenced by her own experiences and cultural background.
Colón-Zayas began her off-Broadway career after graduating from SUNY Albany with a degree in theater. She is a founding member of the LAByrinth Theater Company and wrote the solo show “Sistah Supreme” about growing up as a Latina in New York. She has had small roles in television and film, including appearances in “Law & Order”, “Sex and the City” and “Nurse Jackie”. In 2019, she landed her first recurring role on the series “David Makes Man” and, in 2021, in the revival of “In Treatment”.
Her role in “The Bear” marked a significant moment in her career. Colón-Zayas shares that despite the many rejections over the years, finally finding success with this role is exciting, albeit difficult to fully accept. Growing up in a time when Latino actors were rare in the media, she faced many challenges and stereotypes, but always maintained her determination to act, influenced by her community and her husband, actor David Zayas.
To prepare for the second season of “The Bear”, Colón-Zayas underwent intense culinary training, honing her skills to play a chef. She has also faced personal challenges, such as overcoming her fear of singing in public for a karaoke scene in the series, showcasing her growth and vulnerability as an actress.
Colón-Zayas is an example of perseverance and authenticity, bringing her life experience to her roles and contributing to a more diverse and realistic representation of Latino characters in the media.
