Kamala Harris and Donald Trump promote the narrative of "freedom", but with different meanings

The campaigns of Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are courting the Latino electorate, particularly Hispanic women, a growing population of great political importance in the US, according to NBC News.

Harris, the U.S. vice president, is focused on issues of "freedom," including the right to vote, protection from gun violence, and especially reproductive freedom. The latter is a central issue for the Democratic Party, given that many Latinas live in states with strict abortion bans, which directly affects their choices and rights over their own bodies. The fall of "Roe v. Wade" has increased the relevance of this discussion, with Harris pointing out the need to protect the right to abortion and treatments such as IVF.

On the other hand, political organizations that support Trump are promoting a different version of "freedom," focused primarily on economic issues. Republicans seek to associate Democratic policies with "socialism," a term often used to appeal to Latinos whose families have suffered under authoritarian regimes associated with socialism. Republican campaigns have highlighted the importance of lowering taxes and reducing regulation, emphasizing that Democrats' economic policies are detrimental to business, especially small businesses, in which Latinas have a growing role as entrepreneurs.

The electoral dispute is intensifying, with both sides recognizing the strategic importance of Latinas. Trump, who had a considerable increase in support among Hispanic women voters in 2020 compared to 2016, is trying to capitalize on this advance, while Harris seeks to maintain and broaden her base among young Latina women, a group in which she is more popular than President Biden, according to the publication. Initiatives such as "Latinas for Freedom" and "Poder PAC" show the effort of both parties to secure this decisive electoral bloc.

In short, the narrative of "freedom" is at the center of the campaigns, but with very different meanings. While Harris and the Democrats focus on freedom of choice and reproductive rights, the Republicans highlight economic freedom, trying to win over Latinos in a context of strong political polarization.
