Donald Trump tried a friendlier speech with Latino voters in Univision debate

Former President Donald Trump participated in a debate organized by Univision to court the Latino vote, a crucial demographic for elections, especially in swing states such as Arizona and Nevada. Trump highlighted his economic record, stating that Latinos were better off during his term. He mentioned that he provided jobs, including at his golf course in Florida, to appeal to Spanish-speaking audiences.

However, the event was marked by questions about immigration. When asked by a California farmer who would do the farm work if he deported millions of undocumented migrants, Trump deflected the issue to crime committed by undocumented immigrants and reiterated the importance of workers entering the country legally and loving the United States, according to an NPR report. He also made false claims about the Biden administration, saying it had unleashed dangerous criminals in the U.S.

Also according to the publication, Trump was pressured on a bipartisan border bill that failed after his alleged intervention and on unsubstantiated statements that Haitian migrants in Ohio were eating cats and dogs. He defended himself by claiming that he was just repeating what was reported.

Despite the doubts of part of the Latino electorate, Trump has increased his support among this group, mainly because of his economic message. However, he still faces criticism, such as that of a Republican who mentioned his concern about the January 6 invasions and wanted to know how Trump intended to win back his vote. Trump defended the attack on the Capitol, calling it a "day of love" and claiming that people were protesting the election.

The event came shortly after a similar debate with Vice President Kamala Harris. While Democrats have traditionally had an advantage among Latino voters, polls show Trump has managed to close that gap, making the race closer.
