UCLA Report Points to Greater Diversity in Top Hollywood Movies in 2023

The UCLA's 11th HollywoodDiversity Report 2024 released just before the Oscars, highlights a significant milestone: For the first time in the report's history, films with diverse casts made up a plurality of the top films of 2023. This change is observed based on data such as the financial success and ethnic representation of the aforementioned films.

The report highlights three franchise films, “Creed III”, “Scream VI” and “John Wick: Chapter 4”, which featured 50% or more black actors and achieved significant financial success. In addition, the report points out that both diverse viewers and women were the main audience for many of last year's top films, indicating a shift in consumption patterns.

Films such as “Barbie”, which featured Oscar-nominated supporting actors America Ferrera and Ryan Gosling, achieved success at the box office, especially due to the support of women, who accounted for nearly 70 percent of U.S. ticket sales. In addition, some of the year's top films featured Latino actors, although the representation of this community is still underrepresented on screen, compared to its proportion in the U.S. population, according to the NBCNews report.

Comments from NBC respondents highlight persistent challenges, such as the underrepresentation of Latinos in leadership roles and positions in the film industry. They emphasize the importance of having more diversity in studio decision-making rooms to ensure a broader understanding of Latino audiences and the promotion of diverse stories.

However, despite the challenges faced by creators, the UCLA report demonstrates that diversity remains a valuable aspect of financial success in the film industry, reflecting a shift in audience preferences and the demand for diverse storytelling.
