Donald Trump’s campaign to appeal to Latino voters has undergone a revamp, highlighting the name change from “Latinos for Trump” to “LatinoAmericans for Trump”. According to a report by NBC News, Jaime Florez, director of Hispanic communications for the Republican National Committee and the Trump campaign, explained that the change is intended to emphasize that Latinos are Americans, regardless of their origin:
“Whether you’re African American, Latino American, Asian American, European American, wherever you come from, we are all American”.
Florez stressed that the campaign seeks to unite Latinos under American identity and promote the American dream. The new approach involves rallies and announcements in English and Spanish, but specific details about execution and budget have not been disclosed.
Trump's campaign began its outreach to Latinos later than Biden's, which had already launched “Latinos con Biden” and invested in field operations in key swing states. Trump's campaign has been delayed due to Trump's trial on charges of falsifying business records, complicating his plans.
Trump made strides among Latino voters in 2020, especially in Texas and Florida, and continues to have some support among this group. The economy is a central concern for Latinos, many of whom do not believe the economy has improved under Biden. Trump is trying to capitalize on that dissatisfaction by touting his economic record during his presidency.
Biden’s campaign manager, Julie Chavez Rodriguez, meanwhile, defends his accomplishments, such as reducing health care costs, creating jobs, and growing Latino small businesses. Florez singles out Trump's straightforward style as a pull for Latino voters, who appreciate his outspokenness, according to the report.
On the other hand, Trump's critics, including the
Biden campaign, accuse him of being more focused on himself and undermining
basic freedoms than on providing real solutions for Americans, including the
Latino community.
