Maria de Lourdes Hinojosa Ojeda is a prominent Mexican-American journalist. Hinojosa is recognized as the anchor and executive producer of the Latino USA public radio program on National Public Radio (NPR), as well as the founder, president and CEO of Futuro Media Group, which produces the program. In addition, she won the Pulitzer Prize in 2022.
Maria Hinojosa has made a significant contribution to journalism, especially in relation to the Latino community in the United States. Hinojosa is a leading figure in multiplatform community journalism, founding Futuro Media Group with the goal of producing journalism that celebrates American cultural diversity.
She was recognized for her work on CNN and PBS and her role as host and producer of several shows, including "America by the Numbers" and "Maria Hinojosa: One-on-One." In addition, she is the author of several books and has participated in notable projects such as the HBO special "The Latino List."
Maria Hinojosa was born in Mexico City, the daughter of Berta Maria Ojeda Y de Teresa and Dr. Raul Efren Hinojosa Prieto. She moved with her family to Chicago's Hyde Park neighborhood in 1962 after her father was appointed to the University of Chicago faculty of surgery. She currently lives in Harlem with her husband, Dominican painter German Pérez, and their adult son and daughter.
In a 2021 episode of the PBS series Finding Your Roots, Hinojosa learned that her paternal 11th great-grandfather was Diego de Montemayor, a Spanish conqueror and founder of the Mexican city of Monterrey, and that his third great-grandparents on his mother's side, who lived in Cuba, were members of the Spanish nobility. It has also been found that their direct matrilineal line is indigenous to Mexican.
Hinojosa has received numerous awards and honors throughout her career, including Emmy Awards, the Robert F. Kennedy Prize for Journalism, and the Pulitzer Prize. Her influence and contribution to journalism and the Latino community in the United States are highlighted as key aspects of her professional career.
