Julio José Frenk Mora (born December 20, 1953) is a Mexican physician and sociologist. He is currently the sixth president of the University of Miami, a position he has held since 2015. Frenk earned his medical degree from the National Autonomous University of Mexico in 1979 and earned two master's degrees and a doctorate from the University of Michigan in 1983. His public career includes serving as Mexico's Secretary of Health from 2000 to 2006, where he introduced the "Seguro Popular" health insurance program.


In addition to his work in public health, Frenk has held prominent academic positions. He was dean of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health from 2009 to 2015 and has served in a variety of roles at the University of Miami, including professor of public health sciences, health sector management, and sociology. In 2024, he was appointed president of the University of California, Los Angeles, a position he will take over in January 2025.


His youth was marked by the influence of his Jewish family who fled Nazi Germany for Mexico. Frenk has had a diverse career, holding leadership positions in public health and academic institutions, as well as serving as a global healthcare consultant. Among his accomplishments are the implementation of significant reforms in the Mexican health system and his involvement in important global health discussions.


At Harvard, Frenk oversaw the school's largest endowment, resulting in the renaming to the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. He has also co-chaired commissions and working groups focused on health professional education and global health policy. Frenk is recognized for his commitment to health care reform and social inclusion, standing out as an influential leader in his field.


On June 12, 2024, Frenk was named seventh president of the University of California, Los Angeles effective January 1, 2025, replacing Gene Block.
